Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon review: Better-than-HD ultrabook gets smart function keys
Every once in a while, an example of technological design jumps out as substantially better than the competition. That's the feeling I got when I started using the keyboard on the latest version of Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The hefty, well-spaced keys feel great to use and avoid the shallowness of so many ultrabook-style laptop keyboards.
It's not a new keyboard, and I've used similar ones on many other recent ThinkPads, but after using and reviewing so many other laptops, it was a welcome change of pace to put my fingers on the keys and feel an immediate difference. However, there's a flip side. (Not literally.) A couple of jarring changes in the standard keyboard layout might drive you crazy, as described below.
There are a lot of premium (read: expensive) features packed into the new X1. The 14-inch display is a touch screen with a very high 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution (a less expensive 1,600x900 screen is also available, but for $1,299 and up it seems like a bad deal). Prices and configurations on the Lenovo Web site have changed more than once just while I was writing this review, with starting prices jumping from $1,299 to $1,499, and dropping back down to $1,299. As of right now, the 1,600x900-pixel-display version starts at $1,299, while the 2,560x1,440 version starts at $1,399. Our specific system starts with the higher-res touch screen, combining it with a Core i5 CPU, 128GB solid-state drive (SSD), and 8GB RAM for $1,679 -- according to Lenovo, although this exact configuration does not seem to be available on the Lenovo Web site right now.
There's one extra new feature that makes the X1 Carbon stand out even more from the crowd -- something Lenovo calls an adaptive keyboard. This replaces the function key row at the very top of the keyboard with a small touch-screen strip that changes based on the app you're using. There are four presets with different commands, including ones for Web browsing and VOIP use.
It's a pretty clever concept, and the strip changed automatically when we opened different applications, which was an unexpected bonus. But it's also more of a party trick than a game-changer, and it won't convince you to drop $1,300 to $2,000 on the X1 Carbon if you were planning to spend significantly less on something else.
Instead, if you're considering the X1 Carbon, you're probably looking for a very lightweight laptop, with a larger, higher-res screen than most slim ultrabooks; premium design and construction, including the best keyboard and touch pad in the Windows world; and the IT chops, including vPro and TPM, to play nice with corporate networks.

Design and features
Lenovo says this is the lightest 14-inch laptop in the world, and at 3.1 pounds, it certainly weighs less than many 13-inch laptops (and if you skip the touch screen, it can get down to 2.9 pounds). The carbon fiber body helps keep it light, and also adds strength and durability. Like previous versions of the X1, the notebook's display folds back 180 degrees, allowing you to lay the system down flat, or at least find the perfect angle when you're in a cramped meeting room or coffee shop.
In overall look and feel it's nearly identical to last year's X1 Carbon, although that system weighed a hair more. Both are cast in matte black, tapering toward the front lip, and with a squared-off rear edge. This year's Carbon is not as flashy as even some of Lenovo's other laptops, such as the excellent Yoga 2 Pro, but there's a timelessness to the design that should hold up in the office or on the road.
One of the big selling points is Lenovo's meticulously crafted keyboard. This version retains the modified island-style keys used in the previous X1 and most of the current ThinkPad line. It's also backlit, which is a feature every travel-oriented laptop should have. As with other island-style Lenovo keyboards, the individual keys have a slightly convex curve at the bottom, which helps with missed keystrokes. Even on this slim chassis, the keys have excellent depth and solid, tactile feedback.
Despite my praise for this keyboard, there is one part of the layout that drives me completely crazy. The Backspace key now sits just to the left of a smaller Delete key. The latter is more typically found on the function key row (or on MacBooks, not found at all). Because Backspace was no longer the key at the top right corner of the keyboard, I inevitably hit Delete when I meant to hit Backspace. It sounds like a small thing, but it was a serious impediment to productivity when working on the X1, and I'm frankly surprised this layout issue passed the usually laser-focused minds at Lenovo. The Caps Lock key has also been replaced by a split Home/End key. That change bothered me less, but touch typists will no doubt stumble over this as well.
The touch pad also gets an upgrade from last year's X1. It now follows the model of other recent ThinkPads, ditching the last vestiges of physical mouse buttons -- both the under-the-pad buttons and the second set above the pad, for use with the red trackpoint nestled between the G, H, and B buttons. Both sets of mouse buttons are built into the pad itself, clickpad-style.
I found the touch pad's sensitivity to be cranked way up by default, and the settings required some tweaking to feel comfortable. Finding the touch-pad settings was a bit of an adventure, as there are competing settings sections from Microsoft and Lenovo. It's not obvious, but use Windows 8 search and search for "mouse," not "mouse and touch-pad settings," and from there, you'll see a ThinkPad tab that takes you to the custom settings. I also had to reduce the size of the touch pad's swipe-in zone, as I was always accidentally activating the Charms bar in Windows 8 during casual navigation.
The adaptive keyboard is a clever idea I have yet to see on another laptop, although it could certainly trickle down into other Lenovo systems if well-received here. The adaptive strip, which replaces the function key row, looks a bit like an e-ink display, but it's actually a liquid crystal layer, cleverly backlit to work in any lighting conditions.
Different apps cause the row to switch between four presets. For example, launching Chrome, Safari, or IE will give you a row of commands including a page-reload button and a new tab button; launching Skype or Google Talk gives you microphone controls. The Windows 8 menu screen has buttons for accessing cloud storage, voice and gesture recognition software, and the full Windows 8 app list.
It's an interesting idea, and works as advertised. That said, I don't see it as being enough to sway your purchase decision one way or another. The commands are not programmable, and three of the four rows of commands actually share most of the same buttons. That said, I'd love to see this idea expanded into other systems, and with the ability to create custom commands.
The 14-inch touch screen is a system highlight, thanks to its 2,560x1,440-pixel native resolution. There is a lower-res screen option available, a mere 1,600x900 pixels, but that seems like a poor way to save a few bucks on an already expensive laptop. The display has a matte finish that still allows colors to pop, while keeping glare down, and the screen looks good even from wide viewing angles.

Connections, performance, and battery
Like many business systems, the X1 Carbon skips the SD card slot (a security concern for some), but you do get two video outputs, both HDMI and Mini DisplayPort. Ethernet requires a dongle, but Lenovo would no doubt like you to use one of its OneLink docks to add additional connectivity, including DVI, full Ethernet, and four USB 3.0 ports. That standalone dock costs $179, a hefty additional investment, but I use an older USB-powered version, and have found it to be excellent.
In our benchmark tests, the Core i5-powered X1 Carbon performed as expected when compared with other recent ultrabooks with higher-than-1080p displays. Nearly all these systems have fourth-gen Core i5 CPUs, from Intel's ultra-low-power line (except the Toshiba Kirabook, which has a previous-generation Core i7), and you'll find any of these more than powerful enough for everyday personal and business tasks, from putting together PowerPoint presentations to social media and Web surfing to streaming HD video.
Given all that, what we're really looking for from the X1 Carbon is amazing battery life. A slim, on-the-go laptop needs to last all day, and while the X1 does well, it's not a long-lived as some. The system ran for 5 hours, 41 minutes, in our video playback battery drain test, which is merely OK, and not in the same ballpark as the 13-inch MacBook Pro, nor even the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus or Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. Keep in mind that all of the systems mentioned here have better-than-HD displays.
Conclusion
The third version of the ThinkPad X1 is the best to date, and it remains one of the only choices for a slim, high-design business laptop with premium features. The addition of both a 2,560x1,440-pixel-resolution display and the adaptive function key row is welcome, but these upgrades also drive the price up high enough that you're likely to have to twist some arms to get your IT department to get this as your next work laptop.

How to Install a Window AC Unit
Installing a window air conditioner is typically a straightforward DIY process that can quickly transform a muggy room into a much more comfortable space.

Installing a window air conditioner
To come up with this basic set-up guide, I reviewed the installation instructions from three different window AC units: the LG LW5016, the Toshiba RAC-WK0511CMU and the GE AKLK14. Keep in mind that some details may vary from unit to unit, so always check your user manual before you begin installing a window air conditioner.
For a window AC installation, you'll need a screwdriver (some guides specify Phillips head, others flathead -- and some both), a level, a pencil, a tape measure and scissors.
Most window AC units come with mounting panels and weatherstripping material in addition to the air conditioner. These accessories help create a seal designed to block the cool air from leaking outside and the hot air from leaking in.
Step 1: Connect the panels to the air conditioner
Once you have the required tools, unbox the air conditioner, along with all of the accessories and hardware. Next, attach the panels to the AC unit. Side panels that open to a desired size are common. Your unit might also have top and bottom panels. Depending on the unit you have, this may require hardware and a screwdriver. Other panels slide into place without requiring screws.
Step 2: Seal the window
Use the included weatherstripping material to create a seal on the window. Typically, this material has an adhesive side for easy installation. Cut the strip to the desired size with scissors and place on the window to restrict air leakage.
Step 3: Install the air conditioner
Lastly, attach the air conditioner to the window. This step will likely require a screwdriver and hardware to make sure the AC unit is securely connected to the window. Follow the manufacturer guidelines closely here to ensure the air conditioner is positioned correctly. The panels should cover any space that would otherwise be open to the elements; the weatherstripping should create a tight seal between the window and the air conditioner.
Final thoughts
Before you buy your window air conditioner, make sure you select the right size unit for your room to allow it to function optimally. Once you've made your selection and set up your AC unit, there are some other things to consider. In order to ensure your air conditioner lasts as long as possible, make sure to clean it regularly. Also be aware of these signs that your window unit might need a repair.
And, if you aren't sold on a window air conditioner for your space, consider a portable AC unit instead. They're more versatile than a window unit because they can travel with you from room to room as needed.

Facebook overpaid FTC fine by billions to shield Zuckerberg, shareholders allege
Facebook agreed to pay billions of dollars extra on top of an initial fine sought by the Federal Trade Commission in 2019 to protect CEO Mark Zuckerberg from personal liability related to a massive data leak probe, shareholders allege in a pair of lawsuits made public on Tuesday.
In lawsuits filed last month in Delaware's Chancery Court, two groups of shareholders cited internal discussions among Facebook's board members in alleging they authorized a $4.9 billion overpayment of the fine to shield Zuckerberg, the company's co-founder and largest stockholder, and COO Sheryl Sandberg. The lawsuits were reported earlier by Politico.
"Zuckerberg, Sandberg and other Facebook directors agreed to authorize a multi-billion settlement with the FTC as an express quid pro quo to protect Zuckerberg from being named in the FTC's complaint, made subject to personal liability, or even required to sit for a deposition," one of the suits alleged.
The FTC started investigating Facebook in 2018 after revelations surfaced that Cambridge Analytica, a UK political consultancy, accessed data from up to 87 million Facebook users without their permission. The agency's probe focused on whether Facebook violated a legal agreement it had with the US government to keep its users' data private.
Zuckerberg was named as a co-defendant in the action in a draft complaint the FTC sent to Facebook in early 2019, the partially redacted lawsuit alleges. The complaint alleges that Facebook's lawyers had determined the company faced a fine closer to $107 million but the company's board agreed to pay a $5 billion penalty in exchange for keeping Zuckerberg and Sandberg from being named in the settlement.
The lawsuit notes that on the same day the FTC settlement was announced, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced it would fine Facebook $100 million as part of a settlement tied to its probe into the social network's handling of the data.
"The Board has never provided a serious check on Zuckerberg's unfettered authority," shareholders said in one of the lawsuits. "Instead, it has enabled him, defended him and paid billions of dollars from Facebook's corporate coffers to make his problems go away."
Facebook and the FTC didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

This device turns your sweaty finger into a gadget charger
Scientists have come up with a device that harvests sweat from your fingertip to generate power. The flexible, thin strip wraps around the tip of a finger like a Band-Aid and converts chemicals found in human sweat into small amounts of electrical energy. Fingers constantly produce sweat, so the device can work without the wearer moving a muscle.
"By using the sweat on the fingertip -- which flows out naturally regardless of where you are or what you're doing -- this technology provides a net gain in energy with no effort from the user," said Joseph Wang, a professor of nanoengineering at UC San Diego and co-author of a paper describing the product, published Tuesday in the journal Joule.
It's common for self-powered wearable systems that rely on bioenergy harvesters to require excessive inputs of energy. But because this device doesn't require any physical input from the wearer to work, it's "a step forward to making wearables more practical, convenient and accessible for the everyday person," study co-author Lu Yin, a nanoengineering Ph.D. student at UC San Diego, said in a statement. UC San Diego researchers previously worked on temporary tattoos that turn sweat to power.
While the new product can produce power, it's not time to kick your tangly cords and finicky electrical outlets to the curb just yet. The device can potentially power lower-power electronics that operate in the milliwatt range, such as a wristwatch, but it's not yet suitable for continuously powering high-performance electronics such as smartphones, the researchers say.
"Our goal is to make this a practical device," Yin said. "We want to show that this is not just another cool thing that can generate a small amount of energy and then that's it. We can actually use the energy to power useful electronics such as sensors and displays."
Fingertips, each packed with more than a thousand sweat glands, can produce between 100 to 1,000 times more sweat than most other body parts. It might be hard to notice how sweaty they are, though, since the sweat typically evaporates from fingertips as soon as it comes out. This new device collects it before it can.
The device was built to be highly absorbent. First, sweat is absorbed and converted into energy by a padding of carbon foam electrodes. The electrodes have enzymes that trigger chemical reactions between lactate and oxygen molecules in sweat, generating electricity. There's also a chip underneath the electrodes made of piezoelectric material that generates more energy when pressed.
Electrical energy is stored in a small capacitor as a wearer sweats or presses on it. It can then be discharged to fuel low-powered devices.
As a subject slept for 10 hours with the device on a fingertip, the wearable collected 400 millijoules of energy, which is enough to provide 24 hours worth of power to an electronic wristwatch (but not a smartwatch). The researchers note that strapping devices to additional fingertips would generate even more energy. But I'm still processing the news about how many sweat glands are on ONE of my fingers, much less 10.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 series battles for 1440p gaming
The battle rages on. A week before AMD was scheduled to deliver the details about its new Navi-generation midrange graphics cards, the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT, rival Nvidia announced bumped-up "Super" versions of its directly competing RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 at slightly lower prices than AMD had publicly revealed for its new cards. So two days prior to its rollout, AMD dropped the prices on its cards to match: $349 for the 5700, $399 for the XT version and $449 for the 50th anniversary edition version of the 5700 XT.
While 1080p gaming remains the most popular resolution, 1440p (2,560 x 1,440) is the next enthusiast frontier, and both companies want a piece of it -- so much so that they've entered into a price war before their cards have even shipped. The 5700 series is available now.

But AMD's entering the battle with a revamped processor architecture, hoping to break the perception of being the "value" option rather than the performance leader. And based on our preliminary testing, the RX 5700 does seem to deliver better frame rates across various benchmarks than the RTX 2060, at least at 1080p. Unfortunately, we don't have an RTX 2060 Super yet for comparison.
While the Radeon VII remains the flagship card in AMD's gaming line, its technology straddles generations -- it's built on AMD's 7nm process, but it doesn't have the upgraded memory architecture, PCIe 4 support, more efficient compute-unit design, lower power draw, quiet operation and more that comprises AMD's "RDNA" architecture for the Navi generation. With Navi, AMD moves from using HBM2 (high-bandwidth memory) to the more widely used GDDR6 for its consumer products.
AMD positions both cards as 1440p contenders, but the extra $50 buys you the ability to play at a higher-quality setting. Across the board, we saw roughly a 10% increase in frame rates from the 5700 to the 5700 XT at 1440p, and both delivered average frame rates of more than 70fps overall.
And the cards are very quiet. They are bigger and do require more power than the RTX 2060 -- it uses similar connections to the 2080 Ti, and they're both bigger than the 2060 -- but the 2060 Super has increased power requirements as well. In addition to differences in the number of compute units (the rasterization engine of a graphics processor) and clock speeds, the 5700 and 5700 XT differ by look. The 5700 XT has a less featureless surface and the logo glows red, plus only part of the internal circuit board peeps out; the 5700's entire underside is exposed.
They do have the same connectors on the back, however, 3 DisplayPort 1.4 and 1 HDMI 2.0b. I do miss having a USB-C port back there like on an Nvidia card since they're still pretty rare in desktop systems.
Along with the cards, AMD revved its Adrenalin utility software with a few new features, most notably Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) and Anti-lag. RIS does what Nvidia's DLSS is intended to (without the AI), provide a better image when playing at higher resolutions -- e.g., displaying in 1440p while the graphics card is only working with 1080p, to minimize the performance hit of a higher resolution. (My testing was interrupted by a network outage in our lab, so I was unable to download some games I wanted for visual comparison.)
Specifically, RIS uses a technique called contrast-adaptive sharpening to improve detail on textures with less-defined edges. (CAS is similar to what the new Texture tool in Lightroom does.) There are two flavors: game developers can integrate support or you can toggle it in Adrenalin to apply it on the fly for unsupported games. The former will deliver better results. As far as I could tell, there was no performance penalty for applying it in the driver.
Anti-lag essentially works to better sync the CPU and GPU so there are fewer wasted cycles between the time you click the mouse and the display responds -- AMD claims about 30% improvement.

LG's Rumored Rollable Phone Shows Up in a YouTube Video
LG left the smartphone business a year ago, but left one big mystery behind: the rollable phone it teased at CES 2021. Now a video on YouTube may have revealed a working version of the device in the wild.
The LG Rollable, as we assumed it would be called, first appeared in the company's CES press conference, which showed the phone's display smoothly extend -- but so smoothly that it could've been CG magic. The LG Rollable in the YouTube video surfacing today looks real, though, and the screen even looks responsive to touch commands. Other factors in the video like reflections make it even more likely that this is the real deal, as The Verge pointed out.
It's tough to tell how functional this version of the LG Rollable is, meaning it could be a prototype with only a working display or a market-ready version. The short video does show us that the back of the LG Rollable has three cameras and a flash, though neither are used, nor do we see any software but the home screen. Given LG intended to release the Rollable in 2021, this could be closer to the final version of the phone.

Home Run Inn Pizza Recall: Check Your Freezer for These Frozen Meat Pizzas
About 13,000 pounds of Home Run Inn frozen meat pizzas are being recalled due to potential metal contamination. The product's meat topping "may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal," according to a Sunday announcement from the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The recall applies to 33.5-ounce boxes of Home Run Inn Chicago's Premium Pizzeria Deluxe Sausage Classic Pizza with a best by date of Dec. 3, 2022. That's the equivalent of about 6,256 pizzas.
The issue was discovered when customers sent complaints stating that metal was found in the pizza. No confirmed reports of injuries or adverse reactions due to eating the product have been made, the USDA said.
If you recognize this product in your freezer, check to see if the label, expiration date and other specific information matches that of the recalled product.
Home Run Inn's pizzas aren't the only products that have been recently recalled. Many drinks made by Lyons Magnus, including products from Oatly, Premier Protein and Stumptown, have also been pulled due to possible contamination.

Xiaomi's 12 Pro Has Blisteringly Fast 120W Charging, Powerful Specs
The Xiaomi 12 Pro -- the latest flagship from the Chinese brand -- is stuffed full of top tech, including the newest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and a 120-watt wired fast charger that claims a blisteringly fast recharge speed. Combined with a top-end camera, the 12 Pro offers strong competition to the likes of the iPhone 13 Pro, Google Pixel 6 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, even if it's a relatively unknown brand in the US. Having spent some time with the phone, there's a lot I like about it, from its glorious screen and its wildly powerful processor to its solid camera.
The phone will go on sale later this month in the UK and Europe, and while US availability is yet to be confirmed, Xiaomi's official pricing puts the phone as starting at $999 for the base model (with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage), or roughly £765 and AU$1,380 when converted. I've been testing the higher model, with 12GB RAM and a more generous 256GB of storage, although how much more that'll set you back isn't clear at the time of writing.
That price puts it squarely on par with the base iPhone 13 Pro, while sitting $200 under the S22 Ultra, making it a potentially solid option for those of you wanting a high-performance Android phone while still keeping some cash left in your bank account.
Humdrum design, beautiful display
Physically I don't think the phone is particularly exciting to look at, at least in the gray color that my review model arrived in. It's perfectly fine and if you usually use a case then it's probably a moot point, but its plain frosted glass back and standard rectangle camera unit are a little uninspired. I'd at least opt for the purple or blue colors it's also available in to add a bit of aesthetic appeal.
Still, it feels sturdy to hold, and it uses toughened Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back so I'm confident it can take a few knocks without shattering into a million pieces. It doesn't have an official IP waterproof rating (that I've been told so far, at least) so it's worth keeping it especially safe when holding it near swimming pools, toilets or clumsy friends carrying beers. I've asked Xiaomi for clarification on waterproofing as this is a common feature on flagship phones and I'd hope to see this here.
On the front is a 6.73-inch AMOLED display which is both bright and vibrant. Its punchy colors will suit those of you who play a lot of colorful mobile games, while its 3,200x1,440-pixel resolution means that even tiny details are pin sharp. It has a 120Hz refresh rate too, making scrolling seem buttery smooth, but you can turn this down (or leave it on auto) in order to preserve battery life.
Solid camera
On the back you'll find three 50-megapixel cameras: a standard zoom, a 2x telephoto zoom and an ultrawide camera. The main camera uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor which is physically larger than you'll find on the iPhone 13 Pro. Larger sensors typically mean they can capture more light and therefore produce better looking shots.
So far in my testing I've found the 12 Pro's images to be generally decent, but not outstanding. Colors are vibrant and exposure is fine, although the ultrawide lens sometimes overexposes some highlights in a scene.
The 2x zoom lens is good, but I'd like to have seen a longer zoom range -- 5x or even up to the Galaxy S22 Ultra's amazing 10x optical zoom. A longer zoom really opens up more interesting compositions that are still out of reach with a 2x lens.
That large main image sensor helps it take fairly bright, sharp images at night and I'd say that my test shots so far are pretty much on par with Android rivals such as the Pixel 6 Pro or the Oppo Find X5 Pro. It can shoot video at up to 8K resolution and you'll find dedicated video effects, along with optical stabilization for smoother-looking handheld footage.
Huge power
Inside the phone is Qualcomm's latest 5G-enabled Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, backed up by a meaty 12GB of RAM on my review model. It's an absolute powerhouse, achieving benchmark scores that comfortably outpace the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Pixel 6 Pro and Oppo Find X5 Pro.
While it's important to remember that benchmarks are by no means a complete indicator of performance, the phone does feel extremely capable in everyday use. Navigating around the Android 12-based interface is swift and lag-free while playing demanding games like Asphalt 9: Legends and PUBG. It all looks incredibly smooth, with high frame rates at all times.
Good battery and fast charging
Inside the phone is a 4,600-mAh battery, which gets comfortably through a full day of mixed use. How much you tax your battery will always depend on your behavior, but if you're checking email throughout the day, listening to podcasts and other general tasks, you'll likely even have enough power to spare for the next day. Heavier use like spending the day filming 8K video and playing graphically intensive games will likely drain the battery fast enough to warrant charging in the afternoon.
But the phone's incredibly speedy 120-watt fast charging is estimated by Xiaomi to fully recharge the phone from empty in around 18 minutes, hopefully making that afternoon boost pretty easy if you need it. I haven't yet been able to test that claim as it requires a specific faster charger, which normally will come in the box but did not arrive with my review unit.
Cheaper, smaller Xiaomi 12
The 12 Pro is joined by the smaller Xiaomi 12. Beneath its 6.2-inch display is the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, so you can expect similar blistering performance. The rear cameras have been pared down however, with a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 13-megapixel ultra wide and a 5-megapixel 2x telephoto.
It'll come with a more affordable starting price of $749 and could be a good option if you want a high-performance phone in a smaller package.
